A civil rights activist from Spokane, Washington, a business owner and the founder of a winery and his family were among the 10 people killed when a floatplane crashed in the waters of Puget Sound. The U.S. Coast Guard released the names of the crash victims early Tuesday. The body of one of the dead was recovered by a good Samaritan after Sunday's crash. The other nine remain missing.

On the night of March 3, 2020 — three months before George Floyd was murdered — Manny Ellis encountered police while walking home in Tacoma, Washington. He died on that dark street corner. Officers say it was an accident brought on by Manny himself. The story almost ended there. The story is profiled in a new podcast, The Walk Home, produced by KNKX News and The Seattle Times.

A small town in Washington state was evacuated due to a fast-moving fire that burned a half-dozen homes. The Adams County Sheriff’s Office said on Facebook that residents of Lind needed to flee due to the encroaching flames. Later Thursday, Sheriff Dale Wagner said the fire was starting to calm down and evacuations were lifted.

Washington health care leaders say hospitals are again “dramatically over capacity,” as challenges discharging patients worsen and staff shortages persist. Officials say the high patient loads aren’t directly because of COVID-19 cases, although they are increasing, but due to delayed procedures and difficulties discharging hospital patients.

A study published by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources says a tsunami triggered by a major earthquake beneath Puget Sound would arrive at Seattle shores sooner and reach farther inland than previously thought.
