Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how information about you is collected, used, and shared by Pacific Public Media, a Washington nonprofit corporation doing business as KNKX and all of its affiliated entities, business units, trade names, and DBAs including, without limitation, Jazz24 (collectively, “KNKX,” “we” or “us”). We are committed to protecting your privacy, and want you to understand how we do and do not use information about you.

This Privacy Policy applies to all users of our digital platforms, including this website, our mobile applications, and any embeddable content that we may make available for use on other websites or digital platforms (but not including third party content, discussed in Other Platforms, below) (collectively, the “Services”).

How We Collect Information

Information You Provide to Us. You may voluntarily provide us information, including:

  • Your login information
  • Certain personally identifiable information in connection with a contest, sweepstake, or volunteer registration 
  • Your email address when you register for newsletters, request membership information, contact listener support, etc.
  • Your content submissions and community postings
  • Certain content submissions and community postings (i.e., community calendars, forums, bulletin boards, etc.).
  • Pledge and donation information
  • Purchase information for any e-commerce transactions between you and us

Information We Collect Automatically

When you access or use the Services, we may automatically collect information about you, including information about your use of the Services like your IP address, the type of device and browser you use, access times, pages viewed, geotargeting information, and your user behavior. We may use cookies to collect some of the information listed above. Cookies are small data files stored on your hard drive or in device memory that helps us to improve the Services and your experience. We may also collect information using web beacons (also known as “gifs,” “pixel tags” and “tracking pixels”). Web beacons are electronic images that may be used in the Services or emails and help deliver cookies, count visits, and understand usage. We use third-party vendors that provide us analytics on the use of the Services, which may each use their own cookies and web beacons as part of the Services. These third party vendors include, without limitation, Google Signals, Microsoft Clarity, and CivicScience.

How We Use Your Information

Personally Identifiable Information

We do not store user passwords. When you give us personally identifiable information, we only use that information you give us in connection with our provision of the Services, except as noted below under List Sharing Policy. For example, we may email you to invite you to join a new newsletter list or invite you to events. We may share your information with third party vendors for the limited purposes stated above in this paragraph, and never for their own use. We may share your information between and among KNKX, and its current and future parents, affiliates, subsidiaries, and other entities under common control and ownership. If you do not want your name and contact information to be used in this way, you may notify us in an email addressed to with the subject line OPT OUT or call during business hours at 1-877-677-5659. We may also aggregate your personally identifiable information (such as your address) with others to produce non-personally identifiable information that we may use to analyze and improve what we do.

Non-Personally Identifiable Information

We may use other information (apart from personal information and payment information) for things like improving your user experience, selecting third party vendors, and helping donors better understand our audience. To this end, we may share non-personally identifying information with third parties. Further, if we are required by law to share any of your information, we will share to the extent necessary to comply. We may also share user-generated content or information you submit to us via interactive features contained within the Services such as community calendars, comments sections, forums, or bulletin boards.

Payment Information

When you provide us payment information to process a donation or other financial transaction, all such payment information is stored securely, using reasonable, industry-standard security measures. Your payment information and is only used to complete your transactions, and is retained only as long as is necessary to do so.

List Sharing Policy

We may engage in donor list exchange with other non-profit and cultural institutions as part of fulfilling our fundraising goals. We never provide email addresses or information regarding gift giving history or levels in these exchanges. We will not transfer or exchange your personally identifiable information with any candidate for federal, state or local office, political committee, or political party for any purpose whatsoever, except as otherwise required by law or judicial process. We take reasonably appropriate measures to ensure against unauthorized use of such lists, including requiring any third party to abide by our compliance requirements, except as otherwise required by law or judicial process.

Other Platforms

The Services may contain links to platforms and services maintained by third parties that do not necessarily follow the practices outlined in this Privacy Policy. We may also include on the Services certain embedded tools provided and controlled by third parties, or that permit you to submit information to third parties. These services and tools are governed by the terms and policies of those third parties. Our digital platforms also include widgets from third party services. All of these third party services have their own terms and policies.


We may occasionally offer contests in which users may participate through the Services. Each such contest may have its own official rules, which govern your participation in the contest, and which may give us additional rights to use entry information. KNKX may share contest and winner information with business partners to facilitate transfer and logistics around any contest prizes and/or other contest details.


Governing Law

KNKX is based in the United States and the information we collect is governed by U.S. law. By accessing or using the Services or otherwise providing information to us, you consent to the processing and transfer of information in and to the U.S. and other countries, where you may not have the same rights and protections as you do under local law.

This section provides additional disclosures required by the California Consumer Privacy Act (“CCPA”), which applies to the personal information we collect about California residents.

In the preceding 12 months, we have collected the following categories of personal information: identifiers (such as name, contact information, and device identifiers); internet or other electronic network activity information (such as usage data); demographic information (such as age); and commercial information (such as products purchased or sold). We collect personal information for the business and commercial purposes listed in How We Use Your Information above. We share the personal information we collect with the categories of third parties listed in How We Use Your Information above.

Subject to certain limitations, the CCPA provides California residents with the right to:

  • Request to know about the personal information that we have collected about you in the 12 months preceding your request (including the categories of information collected, the source of that information, the business purpose of that collection, the categories of third parties with whom that information is shared, and the specific pieces of personal information collected about you); 
  • Request to delete any personal information about you that we have collected; 
  • Opt-out of “sales” of personal information to third parties, if applicable; and 
  • Not to be discriminated against for exercising these rights. 

CCPA requires that we provide transparency about personal information we “sell,” which is broadly defined. We do not share personal information in exchange for money. We do not knowingly share personal information about consumers under the age of 16.To submit a request to know about your personal information or a request to delete your account, please send an email to We will verify your request by asking you to provide information that matches information we have on file about you. You may designate another person as your authorized agent to act on your behalf with regard to CCPA requests. If you have designated an authorized agent to submit requests on your behalf, we will require proof that the person is authorized to act on your behalf and may also still ask you to verify your identity with us directly.

Data Protection Under GDPR

European Union citizens and individuals residing in the EU are entitled to additional protections under the General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”). Our lawful basis for processing the personal data of an individual who is subject to GDPR protections will vary, but may include contractual necessity, compliance with legal obligations, public interest, or the legitimate business interests of KNKX, provided that such interest is not overridden by the rights or freedoms of the individual. IF no such lawful basis may exist for processing personal data, KNKX must obtain affirmative consent before any processing may occur.

Subject to exemptions under applicable law (which may include, depending on the circumstances, U.S. law protecting the rights to free speech and free press or EU law protecting the rights to freedom of expression or information, including processing for journalistic purposes), you have the following rights with respect to your personal data:

  • To request a copy of your personal data held by KNKX; 
  • To request that KNKX provide you access to and/or rectify personal data that is inaccurate; 
  • To request erasure of your personal data where it is no longer necessary for KNKX to retain it; 
  • To withdraw, at any time, any consent you have given us to  process your personal data; 
  • To request that the data controller provide you with your personal data and where possible, to transmit that data directly to another data controller, where applicable. This right of portability only applies where the processing is based on consent or is necessary for the performance of a contract and if KNKX processes the data by automated means; 
  • To request a restriction on further processing where applicable; 
  • The right to object to processing if the processing is for direct marketing, or is for scientific/historical research and statistics; 
  • To lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. 

You may exercise these rights by contacting KNKX at and stating your specific request in writing. KNKX reserves the right to verify your identity and confirm your right to the information. The following options are also available:

  • To withdraw consent for collection of precise device location, you may access the privacy settings of your mobile device and/or the settings of the KNKX’s mobile applications. 
  • To withdraw consent to marketing emails or email newsletters, click the "unsubscribe" link on the email. You may also change your newsletter preferences by signing into your account or by contacting us. However, even if you opt out of receiving such communications, we retain the right to send you non-marketing communications (such as information about changes to our Terms of Use or this Privacy Policy). Minors Under the Age of 13

This section provides additional disclosures required by the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 ("COPPA") which applies to personal information we collect about children under the age of thirteen (13) (each a “Child” and, collectively, "Children").

We do not knowingly collect personally-identifiable information about children. As set forth in out Terms of Use, Children are not allowed to register for or use certain features of the Services, including any that may involve or require a Child to submit any personally-identifying information. Therein, children are directed to not send any personally-identifiable information about themselves, including their name or contact information.

Children can access many parts of the Services without providing us with personal information. However, we use certain technologies such as cookies and web beacons to automatically collect information from users of the Services which may inadvertently include Children. Such information may include:

  • One or more persistent identifiers that can be used to recognize a user over time and across different websites and online services.
  • Information that identifies a device's location (geolocation information).

We use such automatically collected information and other non-personally identifying information we collect to improve the Services and to deliver a better and improve your user experience by enabling us to:

  • Estimate our user volume and usage patterns with regard to the Services.
  • Understand user preferences and behaviors, allowing us to refine the content contained in the Services.
  • Speed up your searches.

We do not knowingly share, sell, rent, or transfer Children's personal information other than as described in this section. We may disclose aggregated information about many of our users, and information that does not identify any individual or device. In addition, we may inadvertently disclose children's personal information in the manner described in Personally Identifiable Information and List Sharing Policy above.

If you are a parent or legal guardian ("Parent") who believes that we may have collected personally identifiable information regarding your Child, please send us an email to with subject line “COPPA Compliance.” To protect your privacy and security, we may require you to take certain steps or provide additional information to verify your identity before we provide any information. If we discover that we have collected any personally-identifiable information from a Child, we will remove that information from our database as soon as possible.

Changes to Privacy Policy

We may change this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make changes, we will notify you by revising the date at the top of this Privacy Policy and, in some cases, we may provide a more prominent notice (such as adding a statement to our homepage or sending an email notification to users who have registered login information).
