Upcoming viaduct closure will cause massive traffic congestion

Dec 10, 2018

The region is bracing for a change in traffic patterns. Seattle's Alaskan Way Viaduct will be closing permanently on Jan. 11, making way for the new Highway 99 tunnel. The closure is expected to cause issues on both the north and south sides of the city.

Seattle Times transportation reporter Mike Lindblom has been writing stories about what commuters should expect. He tells KNKX Morning Edition host Kirsten Kendrick that he's not immune to traffic concerns, and has already been coming up with new routes for himself ahead of the closure from his home in West Seattle.

WSDOT and Kiewit are hosting a final neighborhood drop-in session Monday, Dec. 10, to talk about the project. People will be able to meet the project team and ask questions. There will not be a formal presentation. The session will be held at the Seattle Center Armory Loft Room 2 from 5 to 8 p.m.
