Glass vessels evocative of the highly ornamented Baroque style, black silhouettes embedded in scenes on ancient pottery vessels, and medallion reliefs of Black figures all abide in the deliberate, expansive practice of Jason McDonald. McDonald’s visual language is deeply rooted in research of ancient histories, traditional techniques, and race. Here, contemporary ideas blend and transform tradition with caring attention to detail, precision in thought, and beauty. Motivated by glass—with its magical properties, myriads of endless possibilities and potential—McDonald’s devotion lies in the desire to refine the craft, making his hands more familiar and knowledgeable with each replication. Through his repetition and re-imagination of these historical forms, the objects transform into sculptures and vessels of time, carrying with them the essence of centuries-old traditions, as well as McDonald’s commitment and insertion of the representation and notions of Black identity. With a commitment to the craft that transcends his own work, McDonald diligently carves out space for those who will follow him through mentoring and the creation of his own glass studio, which he has named Ideal Conditions.

This summer, we’re staying open late every Friday in July, until 7 PM. We heard you. Caregivers, folks whose work schedules don’t allow a visit before our usual 4 PM close, and anyone craving a slower evening now have time to wander the grounds in the warm golden-hour light. It’s a beautiful window for photography, a peaceful chance to take in the serenity of the museum among birdsong, and a wonderful way to decompress after a long work week. Come stroll among the trees, spend time with our special exhibition Bonsai United, and enjoy special programming each Friday evening. All activities are free and no registration is required. We’re open to the public with free admission thanks to support from 4Culture.
Live meditative marimba music on summer Sundays. All ages welcome.
Join musician Erin Jorgensen for an hour of meditative marimba music on Sunday mornings this summer. Bring your own blankets and pillows to the Whim W'him space on Queen Anne hill (a gorgeous refinished church) and re-set your nervous system with the help of a beautiful sounds of a 5-octave concert marimba. All ages are welcome! Sessions recur on Sundays this summer at 11:30am.

Northwest Expressions, the popular summertime exhibition, brings together 50 works by 35 Northwest artists. Assemblage, paintings of many kinds, sculpture, fiber art and mixed media collage are together in Northwind Art's spacious Jeanette Best Gallery. Come see the Juror's Choice Award winner, "Northwest Island" by Marian Morris, and then cast your ballot in the People's Choice Award voting box. The gallery is free to all, including well-behaved dogs, and open 12 noon to 5 p.m. Thursdays through Mondays (closed most Tuesdays and Wednesdays). Broadway at Sunset is an intimate, high-energy theatrical experience that weaves together iconic songs from the Broadway canon with hilarious punchy storytelling. Featuring a dynamic ensemble of performers and a lush live piano accompaniment, the show journeys through beloved musicals—from Chicago and Les Misérables to Gypsy, Ragtime, and beyond—reimagined through a contemporary cabaret lens.
More than a concert, this cabaret explores a central question—“What do you believe in?”—through stories of ambition, love, identity, and resilience. Each number is framed by heartfelt monologues, creating an emotional arc that moves from dreams and self-discovery to courage, connection, and transformation.
Vibrant, moving, and deeply human, Broadway at Sunset celebrates the power of musical theatre to inspire, connect, and remind us of who we are—and who we’re meant to become. Starring: Kat Agudo, Morgan Bartholick, Maggie Jo Chambers, and Kyle LeMaire. Directed by Denise Winter, musical direction by Linda Dowdell, stage management and choreography by Jennifer Saul.
