Geothermal energy

Seattle Public Schools wants to be fossil-free by 2040. The district hopes the geothermal wells currently used to heat and cool 19 of its school buildings will be the future.

Greenhouses could make local fruits and vegetables more available year-round, but they're energy intense. In the Midwest, some growers tap into the Earth's internal heat to warm the structures.

The Northwest's second geothermal power plant has entered service at Neal Hot Springs, near the small town of Vale in eastern Oregon.
