Seattle techies made a movie that looks like Seattle and sounds like India

"Vellai Pookal" is a study in both-and. It's a detective thriller and a family drama. It has a bilingual script in both Tamil and English. It was released in both the U.S. and India. And — this is kind of a big one — most of the people who made the film are first-time filmmakers who are also employees of local technology companies.

In this interview, Gabriel Spitzer speaks with Vivek Elangovan, a Microsoft software engineer who directed and co-wrote the film. They discuss how a bunch of techies ended up making a movie, and what it's been like to see it go out into the world.

The movie is currently showing in Indian theaters, with a second U.S. run Friday through Sunday at Lincoln Square Cinemas in Bellevue.
