This edition of Jazz Northwest is a remembrance of singer, songwriter, pianist and recounter Dave Frishberg, who passed away at his home in Portland on November 14 after a long illness. He was 88, and like a lot of jazz musicians, was a great storyteller and he wrote many songs growing out of his personal experiences on and off stage. A veteran of venues in New York and L.A., he played in Seattle at Parnell's, Jazz Alley (both U.District and downtown) and other locations. We'll devote this hour to a collection of some of our favorites among his many unique songs that are by turn nostalgic, witty, poignant, satirical, touching, and clever.
