The majority of teachers across the country are white. But the student population is much more diverse. A panel of local education experts will be on stage at Town Hall Seattle June 15 for an event called #EducationSoWhite to talk about how that gap can impact everyone inside schools.

Sharonne Navas is taking part in the discussion. She’s the executive director of the Equity in Education Coalition.

Navas sat down with 88.5’s Kirsten Kendrick ahead of the event to explain why it’s important to talk about a lack of teachers of color.

Other panelists for #EducationSoWhite include:

Jesse Hagopian, Garfield High School
Joy Williamson-Lott, University of Washington College of Education
Sharonne Navas, Equity in Education Coalition
Saraswati Noel, Seattle World School
Nathan Simoneaux, Garfield High School

Kirsten Kendrick hosts Morning Edition on KNKX and the sports interview series "Going Deep," talking with folks tied to sports in our region about what drives them — as professionals and people.

Ariel has lived in Indiana, Ohio and Alaska reporting on everything from salmon spawning to policy issues concerning education. She's been a host, a manager and now rides shotgun with Kirsten Kendrick as the Morning Edition producer at KNKX.
