Spanish radio station celebrates five years on air

A low-powered Spanish radio station in Tacoma is building a sense of community for bilingual residents in the South Sound.

Voice Tacoma Radio Universal recently celebrated its fifth year on air. It offers programs that cover topics including politics, religion and consejos, or advice, for car issues that cater to the more than 13,500 Spanish speakers in Tacoma.

Freddy Monares has covered politics, housing inequalities and Native American communities for a newspaper and a public radio station in Montana. He grew up in East Los Angeles, California, and moved to Missoula, Montana, in 2015 with the goal of growing in his career.
