Canoe Journey

Philip H. Red Eagle is the first recipient of the Tribal Arts and Heritage Award. Red Eagle is one of many Indigenous leaders who worked to revive the tradition of Tribal Canoe Journeys in the Pacific Northwest.

Elders passed on traditions to keep them alive for generations to come, as youth from over 100 Native nations took the lead at this year’s annual Pacific Northwest canoe journey.

An annual event in the Pacific Northwest is back on this year after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic: an intertribal canoe journey followed by a week of cultural celebrations.
