Ann Hampton Callaway: Singing the standards, Streisand and making it up as she goes

Vocalist, pianist and composer, Ann Hampton Callaway has had success in the worlds of jazz, Broadway and cabaret. She’s also one of our favorite KPLU Studio Session guests.

We invite her to perform every time she passes through Seattle because, from one visit to the next, we never know what kind of surprises she’ll treat us to.

This time around, with host Abe Beeson and a small audience of KPLU Leadership Circle members, Ann turned Our Love Is Here To Stay into an audience-participation scat-along which was enjoyed by all.

Next, she performed the song she’d written for Barbra Streisand to sing at her (Barbra's) wedding.

To wrap things up, she invited to audience to give her phrases (some of which included ‘sunshine in Seattle’, ‘home for wayward girls’, ‘basketball’ and ‘snuffleupagus’) which she would then include in an improvised song. The resulting song was clever, humorous, daring and delightful.  Watch below!

You can also find our Studio Sessions available as a video podcast in iTunes!

Justin joined KNKX in 2009 as the station's first Multimedia Manager. In this role, Justin helped to produce multimedia content, and implement systems and procedures in efforts to transform KNKX from a traditional broadcast station into a multi-platform media organization.
Abe grew up in Western Washington, a third generation Seattle/Tacoma kid. It was as a student at Pacific Lutheran University that Abe landed his first job at KNKX, editing and producing audio for news stories. It was a Christmas Day shift no one else wanted that gave Abe his first on-air experience which led to overnights, then Saturday afternoons, and started hosting Evening Jazz in 1998.
