Jazz Caliente: Discovering great guitarists

Guitarist Daniel Girón"

The term "Latin jazz" may conjure images of lots of drums, percussion and horns, but let's not forget the guitars. This week on Jazz Caliente, we'll hear a few great guitarists from Columbia, Brazil and right in our own backyard.

Daniel Girón taught himself to play the guitar at age 16, then studied classical guitar. Influenced by the great Paco de Lucia and by the rumba/flamenco music his family listened to when he was growing up in Bogotá, Columbia, Girón deftly mixes styles and traditions.

Beloved Brazilian guitarist and vocalist Filó Machado has performed all over the world. He has a jazzy, lighthearted approach to his performances that is immensely appealing and smile-inducing.

KNKX favorites The Rumba Kings are a guitar-driven band that blends rumba, flamenco and  Mediterranean sounds into a romantic, soulful style all their own. They'll be celebrating the release of their new album at The Triple Door on June 22, and we'll hear a selection from it this week on Jazz Caliente.
