Centrum in Port Townsend is celebrating its 10th year of presenting Choro workshops and concerts. This week on Jazz Caliente, we'll get to know some of the visiting Brazilian artists who make this very popular Centrum program thrive.

Choro, Brazilian music's "sweet lament," is a mix of European traditions and African rhythms. It leaves plenty of room for improvisation, so it's a cousin of jazz. Choro rhythms are insistent and irresistible, and its melodies jump and soar.

Dudu Maia plays bandolim, a Brazilian-style mandolin. He's the artistic director for the Centrum Choro workshops, and he's part of the delightful Trio Brasileiro, along with guitarist Douglas Lora and percussionist Alexandre Lora.

Saxophonist and flutist Daniela Spielmann is an exceptional performer and educator whose jazz feeling permeates her Choro and everything else she plays. Here she's with our own Pacific Northwest treasure, Jovino Santos Neto, at last year's Centrum choro instructor's concert:

Alexandre Ribeiro is an award-winning clarinetist, specializing in Choro. His collaborations with guitarist Alessandro Penezzi are popular worldwide, and he's had a lifelong dedication to teaching the music.

Centrum's Choro concert Saturday night is sold out, but you still have a chance to see some of these great Brazilian musicians. Daniela Spielmann with Jovino Santos Neto Trio, Alexandre Ribeiro, Roberta Valente and Adriana Giordano will be appearing April 29 at 8 p.m. at the Rhythm & Rye in OlympiaApril 30 at 7:30 p.m. at The Royal Room in Seattle, and May 2 at 7:30 p.m. at the North City Bistro in Shoreline.  On May 4 at 8 p.m. at the North City Bistro in Shoreline, the lineup is Alexandre Ribeiro and Roberta Valente with Chuck Deardorf on bass, Marco de Carvalho on guitar, Jeff Busch on drums and Adriana Giordano on vocals.

Listen for Choro from Daniela Spielmann, Trio Brasileiro and Alexandre Ribeiro this week on Jazz Caliente!
