Centrum in Port Townsendis celebrating its 10th year of presenting Choro workshops and concerts. This week on Jazz Caliente, we'll get to know some of the visiting Brazilian artists who make this very popular Centrum program thrive.

Choro, Brazilian music's "sweet lament," is a mix of European traditions and African rhythms. It leaves plenty of room for improvisation, so it's a cousin of jazz. Choro rhythms are insistent and irresistible, and its melodies jump and soar.

Dudu Maia plays bandolim, a Brazilian-style mandolin. He's the artistic director for the Centrum Choro workshops, and he's part of the delightful Trio Brasileiro, along with guitarist Douglas Lora and percussionist Alexandre Lora.

Saxophonist and flutist Daniela Spielmann is an exceptional performer and educator whose jazz feeling permeates her Choro and everything else she plays. Here she's with our own Pacific Northwest treasure, Jovino Santos Neto, at last year's Centrum choro instructor's concert:

Alexandre Ribeiro is an award-winning clarinetist, specializing in Choro. His collaborations with guitarist Alessandro Penezzi are popular worldwide, and he's had a lifelong dedication to teaching the music.
