Southwest Washington Rep. Herrera Beutler Gives Birth To 3rd Child

U.S. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Wash., gave birth to her third child Tuesday, a baby girl named Isana Mae Beutler.

In an announcement on Twitter, the southwest Washington congresswoman said, “We’re healthy and doing well.”

Herrera Beutler and her husband, Dan Beutler, have another daughter, Abigail, 5, and a son, Ethan, 3, and added both kids were “over the moon” with the arrival of their new baby sister.

The congresswoman shared that Isana’s name is German for strong-willed and noted her daughter was born on the 100th anniversary of when women got the right to vote.

Herrera Beutler said the idea to name her Isana came from Abigail.

"We liked it. Abigail is into revolutionary history and she was listening to a story hour about Paul Revere's life and role in the American Revolution. He had an infant daughter named Isana and we thought it was pretty," Herrea Beutler told OPB. "We looked up what it meant and decided it was right for her."

In 2013, Herrera Beutler’s first daughter, Abigail, was born three months premature without kidneys and was diagnosed with a rare condition called Potter’s syndrome. At the time, Abigail was the first baby to survive the often-fatal disease. When Abigail was 2 years old, she received a kidney transplant from her father and is now doing well.

Isana is Herrera Beutler’s third child since she was first elected in 2010 and makes her one of only two women in Congress ever to give birth three times while serving in office. The other is her early political mentor and fellow Washington Republican Cathy McMorris Rodgers from Spokane.

The congresswoman will take a short leave to spend time with her family.

"As mothers know, it's hard to predict exactly how long recovery will take," said Herrera Beutler's spokeswoman, Angeline Riesterer. "So she'll be taking it one day at a time, but plans to return to work as soon as possible."

Herrera Beutler is serving her fifth term and recently filed to run for a sixth term in 2020.
