The results are in for the primary election and the majority of Seattle voters have given the go-ahead to a tunnel that would replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct along the city's waterfront. Nearly 60% of the voters said yes – bringing over a decade of debate to a close.
Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn who opposed the tunnel said in a statement:
"I worked to give the public a direct vote on the tunnel. The public said move ahead with the tunnel, and that's what we're going to do."
In other primary results, King County's renewal of the Veteran and Human Services Levy has been overwhelmingly approved, passing with 66% of the vote. The levy is a renewal, helping veterans and the county's neediest residents.
Key races around the region
On the King County Council, Richard Mitchell is in a slight lead over John Creighton to face incumbent Jane Hague in November. Council member Joe McDermott will face Diana Toledo in the general election. In Snohomish County, Executive Aaron Reardon and challenger State Representative Mike Hope will face off on the November ballot.
In Seattle City Council races, incumbent Jean Godden will go head-to-head with Bobby Forch in the general election; and Sally Clark will run against Dian Ferguson.
On the Seattle School Board, incumbents have advanced to the general election. And in Tacoma, one - possibly two - new people will join the school board: University of Puget Sound professor Dexter Gordon and businessman Scott Heinze will advance to the general election. Both newcomers competed for the seat to replace board member Jim Dugan who did not run.
Also in Tacoma, it looks like Anders Ibsen and Karen Smitherman will advance to the general election in the city's only council contest to draw a primary run off.
