Hey Ladies! Seattle JazzEd's Melba Liston AllStars with Susan Pascal

_MB_0412.jpg

They're not the first all-female jazz band to perform in the knkx studios, but after hearing the teens from Seattle JazzEd, it's about time it stops feeling like a special occasion.

Featuring their mentor Susan Pascal on vibes, the ladies thrilled our packed studio audience with jazz, soul, and a song by the modern jazz outfit Snarky Puppy, and made us forget about girls vs. boys.

Speaking with these all-stars, it was clear that they're aware of the historic male domination of jazz, but also clear they see a bright future and a nearly unending list of powerful and talented female musicians to inspire them. Now put gender aside and dig into this amazing performance.

Abe grew up in Western Washington, a 3rd generation Seattle/Tacoma kid. It was as a student at Pacific Lutheran University that Abe landed his first job at KNKX, editing and producing audio for news stories. It was a Christmas Day shift no one else wanted that gave Abe his first on-air experience which led to overnights, then Saturday afternoons, and started hosting Evening Jazz in 1998.
