This historic event brings together master fiddlers, rising stars, and multi-generational families for two days of incredible live music, lively jam sessions, and authentic Texas culture. The fiddle contest at the Texan Theater features all-ages divisions from “Junior Junior” to the Lone Star Fiddle Championship (Open) with over $10,000 in prize money, making it a must-see event for music lovers and visitors to Athens, Texas.

A herd of animal sculptures and wild paintings fills Northwind Art's gallery in downtown Port Townsend. The show, titled “New Work by Randy Sturgis and Peter Koronakos” features Randy's giant acrylic-charcoal-oil paintings and Peter's animals made of found objects. Together, they make a rich gallery environment. You can even pick up one of the scavenger hunt game cards as you roam around the show. The gallery is open 12 noon to 5 p.m. Thursdays through Mondays; this exhibit runs through May 4. Also: during Port Townsend's first-Saturday Art Walk, you can meet the artists and enjoy refreshments and conversation from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. April 4 and May 2.
What is a Kantele?The kantele, Finland’s national instrument, is a powerful symbol of Finnish cultural heritage and is closely connected to the national epic, the Kalevala.
In the Kalevala, the wise hero Väinämöinen creates the first kantele from the jawbone of a giant pike, stringing it with the hair of a stallion. After losing that instrument, he fashions a second kantele from birch wood. According to Kalevala, the music of the kantele holds magical power. When Väinämöinen plays, the entire natural world grows still to listen—people, animals, forests, and even the waters.
The kantele later became an important national symbol during Finland’s 19th-century cultural awakening, when the Kalevala helped strengthen Finnish identity under Russian rule and prepared the nation for independence in 1917. Today the instrument remains central to Finnish folk music, ranging from traditional five-string kanteles to modern forty-string concert instruments.

Join SilverSounds this April for a concert celebrating Broadway shows that use rock and roll songs to create musicals like "Grease" and "Beautiful: The Carole King Musical". You’ll be tapping your toes and singing along with songs like “Blue Suede Shoes” and “Thriller,” plus songs by Billy Joel and the Jersey Boys. You will be entertained by a choir, soloists, small ensembles, dancers, clever narration, humor, and just plain fun!

About SilverSounds NorthwestSilverSounds Northwest is a fun mixed community chorus of 65 mostly-retired seniors who believe that you’re never too old to rock and roll! Known for their clever, themed concerts, SilverSounds loves to entertain audiences with solos, small ensembles, narration, acting, dance, and choreography. SilverSounds is the only senior chorus in the Greater Seattle Choral Consortium, regularly bringing the joy of music to retirement homes and assisted living facilities in the community.
