We are sad to report that longtime KNKX jazz host Mary McCann recently passed away, shortly after stepping away from hosting.
This is a loss for everyone — family, coworkers, listeners, and everyone who loved her colorful personality. For the past 18 years, Mary shared the music she loved and her deep and thoughtful observations about the artists, their collaborations, and compositions. Her uniquely singular approach to sharing the essence and meaning of the music was often praised and deeply loved by our listeners and her fans.
Mary was dedicated to her craft and to honor her legacy, KNKX will name one of our audio recording studios in Tacoma the “Mary McCann Production Studio.” It is right next to the “Ken Wiley Production Studio,” and together they will serve as a reminder to the reporters and jazz hosts who use the studio of the incredible talent that has defined KNKX for so many years.
On Sunday, KNKX honored Mary with a special edition of Jazz Sunday Side Up. Featuring audio from the archives and some of Mary’s favorite songs from a lifetime of jazz listening, it is currently available to listen on-demand.
Mary was also a narrator on BirdNote since its inception. With her blessing, KNKX and Birdnote will continue to air those stories that feature her wonderful on-air presence and storytelling.
If you would like to share your fond memories of Mary, her family has set up a place to share remembrances online.
Mary was a legend, and she will be missed dearly.
