As your humble New Cool host, I'm out and about catching live jazz on a regular schedule. In fact, when I miss a show I feel a little guilty. So, while I'm out of town for a couple weeks, do me and yourself a favor. Enjoy some of the fantastic modern jazz concerts, featuring a ton of heavy-hitting drummers, heating up mid-winter in the Northwest.

The New Cool: Modern Jazz In The KNKX Studio

Sep 22, 2017
Abe Beeson

This week in the KNKX studios brings two more fresh approaches to non-traditional jazz. Modern music from the Barrett Martin Group and Freudian Slurp is informed by the sounds of rock, electronic music, funk and soul. Both are based in the Seattle area, where The New Cool has been finding plenty of inspiration and material for the show.

Preston Singletary is an internationally recognized blown-glass artist who lives and works in Seattle. He uses his art to share the traditions of his Tlingit culture. But over the last few years he’s been working on another project as a way to communicate those Native traditions. Only this time, it’s with music.

Drummer Stanton Moore is one of the busiest drummers in New Orleans.  Everybody wants to work with him.  Likewise with the other members of his trio, David Torkanowsky (piano) and James Singleton (bass).  These three guys are among the most sought-after musicians in a city brimming with great players.

So it was a true delight to get them into the KPLU performance studio for this live session.  Buckle up, turn it up and take a ride with the Stanton Moore Trio.
