Mariners pitching ace Felix Hernandez has won the American League Cy Young Award despite his 13-12 record.

After falling just short of the honor last year, Mariners pitching ace Felix Hernandez has won his first American League Cy Young Award.  The announcement was made this morning.

Hernandez edged the New York Yankees' CC Sabathia and the Tampa Bay Rays' David Price for the award.  He’s the second Mariner to win the award for the league's best pitcher. Randy Johnson won it in 1995.

Sports commentator Art Thiel will be talking with KPLU’s Kirsten Kendrick about Hernandez finally getting his due.  Sports with Art Thiel airs tomorrow at 5:35 a.m. and 7:35 a.m. on KPLU’s Morning Edition.

Kirsten Kendrick hosts Morning Edition on KNKX and the sports interview series "Going Deep," talking with folks tied to sports in our region about what drives them — as professionals and people.
Art Thiel is a co-founder and writer for the rising sports website Sportspress Northwest. In 2003 Thiel wrote the definitive book about the Seattle Mariners, “Out of Left Field,” which became a regional bestseller. In 2009, along with Steve Rudman and KJR 950 afternoon host Mike Gastineau, Thiel authored “The Great Book of Seattle Sports Lists,” a cross between historylink.org and Mad Magazine that has become mandatory reading for any sports fan who has an indoor bathroom.
