Local travel expert says new travel restrictions will strangle Cuba's economy

Jun 4, 2019

American travelers will no longer be able to visit Cuba using a people-to-people license, after the Trump administration announced new restrictions eliminating the most common category for tourism. KNKX travel expert Matthew Brumley has led trips to Cuba dozens of times through his company, Earthbound Expeditions. He shared his reactions to today’s news with All Things Considered host Ed Ronco.

“My first reaction was sad,” Brumley said. “I was sad for the Cuban people. They are in desperate need of economic support. This really strangles their economy.”

Brumley stressed there are still some categories that allow for travel to Cuba. And booked travel is grandfathered in, he said.

“Cuba is not closed,” Brumley said. “You can still travel to Cuba, you just have to do your homework.”
