Cloudy Friday Expected To Give Way To Sunny, Warm Weekend

Tim Durkan Photography

If Friday’s clouds and drizzle are getting you down, hang in there. KPLU weather expert Cliff Mass says a warm, sunny weekend is in store as soon as the work week ends.

An initial increase in the drizzle and showers from offshore is likely during the afternoon and into early evening, Mass says. But the upper level trough of low pressure that’s causing them will be moving through and yielding a warmer than normal weekend.

Saturday: Transition Day

Mass says high pressure will start building up on Saturday as the trough moves out and nicer weather moves in.

“There may be some clouds in the morning, but temperatures are going to get up to the upper 60s – 66, 67— in much of the region , so really quite a decent day. And it’s going to be dry,” he said.

Then, as the high pressure builds, increasing offshore flow will move toward us from the east.

“And that’s going to rev up the temperatures very, very rapidly on Sunday,” Mass said.

Sunday: A Beautiful Fall Day

He says as the easterly flow sinks down off the Cascades, the air is compressed and warms up, pushing temperatures up to the mid-70s for many people on Sunday.

“It’s going to be an absolutely beautiful fall day,” Mass said. “Way above normal – we’re talking about being on the order of 10 degrees above normal.”

Next Week: Warm And Unusually Dry

He expects that warmth to continue on Monday with temperatures in the lower 70s.

“And quite frankly, I don’t see any rain for days and days after that. So we’re in an unusually dry pattern right now and that’s going to continue, at least into the middle of next week,” he said.
