Two orca stories have been prominent in news in recent days: An endangered orca is still clinging to her dead calf more than two weeks after it died. And scientists are considering intervening to help a different young orca, known as J-50, which they fear is sick and near death.
Allan Warren, with the Pierce Conservation District, says news like this can leave many people feeling helpless, as if there's nothing they can do in response. He also says that's incorrect.
Warren has been posting on the Pierce Conservation District's Facebook page, offering advice people can follow in their own backyards that could ultimately improve the health of Puget Sound's endangered resident killer whales.
He spoke to KNKX about some of that advice.
