Native Environmental Science Program Combines Culture And Data Science

Northwest Indian College
The Salish Sea Research Center at Northwest Indian College

Communities in the Salish Sea basin are working to clean up pollution and better understand how to foster a sustainable environment. It requires data collection and lab work. But it also requires a connection to the cultures of the many nations that touch the Salish Sea.

At Northwest Indian College, students in the Native Environmental Science program pursue that holistic approach to research. They work hands-on in the lab, early in their educational journey. And they communicate with indigenous communities, who help direct the focus of research.

KNKX producer Geoffrey Redick met some of the faculty members who teach and mentor students at the main campus at the Lummi Nation.
