Seattle photographer Gerrit Vyn travels the world to capture images of wildlife – and above all, birds. He says they’re powerful indicators of environmental health. He aims to get people to connect with them as individuals, so that we care and want to preserve their habitat.
Vyn's pictures fill more than 200 pages of a new book called "The Living Bird". It’s published by Mountaineers Books and commemorates the 100-year anniversary of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, for which Vyn works as a producer, capturing audio and video, as well as images such as those in the book.
He spoke with KPLU environment reporter Bellamy Pailthorp about his adventures and the sounds he has captured from remote locations all over the world.
