Ramadan – the Islamic month of fasting – is set to begin on March 22, 2023. Amaarah DeCuir, who researches Muslim student experiences, offers insights into how public schools are moving toward greater recognition of the sacred Islamic month.

The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department arrested a 38-year-old man on suspicion of arson Tuesday in relation to a fire set at the Islamic Center of Tacoma earlier this month. The news comes as the center begins worship in a temporary home at Tacoma Community College.

Fire broke out at the Islamic Center of Tacoma on Oct. 11, just before evening prayers were about to start. The incident, which is being investigated as arson, has taken the community by surprise.

The Al Fatih Academy in Virginia is one of about 270 Islamic schools in the U.S. The staff aim to give their students a well-rounded education and promote civic awareness.

"I believe that in pretty much every religion there is always a small group of fundamentalists," the pope said during a flight from Poland to Italy.

Many Muslims say radicals who cite the Prophet Muhammad to justify violence misrepresent his teachings. To combat ISIS, they say, means strengthening the faithful's understanding of Islam's founder.
