Gabriel Alegria's Afro Peruvian Sextet

Alegría's sextet can transport you to Peru every time you hear its music, but you can also actually go to Peru with the band's "Peru Behind the Scenes" tour.

Established in 2005, trumpeter Gabriel Alegría’s Afro Peruvian Sextet synthesizes folkloric Afro-Peruvian rhythms, jazz and other music.

We're playing music from four of the group's recordings on Jazz Caliente, including their latest, Social Distancing.

Each member of the sextet is not only a master musician but also a dedicated and experienced educator. So it's not surprising that each recording they make seems to dive deeper into the many facets of Afro-Peruvian music.

NYC - Zinc Bar - March 29th, 2019 - Gabriel Alegria Afro Peruvian Sextet

With home bases in Lima and New York City, the band has been embraced by both cities.

Tour Peru, an innovative concept by which fans of the band literally join the musicians on the road in Peru once per year, is an experience that conveys a vast amount of information about the music and offers Black culture, music and food from coastal Peru as a way of life to its audiences.

Tour Peru has been on hold since COVID-19 restricted travel around the globe. But plans are now in place for Tour Peru's next adventure.

"Tour Peru — Behind the Scenes" is scheduled for July 22-31, 2022, for first-time participants. An alumni tour, for those who have traveled with the band before, is scheduled for July 18-27.

Information, videos, sample itinerary and more are all here.

Listen for Gabriel Alegría's Afro-Peruvian Sextet this week on Saturday's Jazz Caliente!
