Keep your rain gear handy if you’re headed outside this weekend. KPLU weather expert Cliff Mass says we’re starting to pay for the drier-than-usual June we’ve had this year.
But Mass says sunny days are around the corner; things will improve by the Fourth of July weekend.
A Dose Of June Gloom
Mass says a weak front is moving through, bringing with it showers for much of Friday.
“The heaviest stuff will be in the morning. And particularly if you’re on the western slopes of the Cascades, it’ll be pretty wet there,” Mass said
Most of western Washington will see showers and heavy clouds with temperatures reaching the mid-60s.
“So, you know, an OK day,” he said.
On Saturday, Eastern Side Of Cascades Will Be Drier
Another weak trough will come in on Saturday, repeating the pattern of clouds and showers, says Mass, “particularly in the convergence zone north of the city and in the mountains.”
“So if you are going to go on a hike in the Cascades, go to the eastern side. The western side’s going to be pretty wet,” he said.
Temperatures will linger on the cooler side, maybe getting in to the mid-60s, says Mass.
‘Sunday — Definitely Improving’
Sunday will begin with a few showers, but they’ll subside as skies become partly cloudy and temperatures get up to about 70, says Mass.
“And I should note that the typical temperature this time of the year, the climatological average at Sea-Tac for instance, is 72 degrees. So, Sunday — definitely improving,” Mass said.
Mass says the temps will continue to climb up into the 70s as more sun sets in on Monday and Tuesday.
Yes, Not A Great Weekend, But Good News Ahead
So is this another case of the dreaded weekend curse?
“Well, it’s a half-weekend curse; Friday and Saturday will be cursed. But Sunday looks like a decent day, but below normal,” Mass said.
Mass says people can console themselves with the likelihood of good weather for picnics and barbecues on Independence Day.
“Looking all the way ahead to July 4th, it looks like it’ll be dry,” said Mass. “Temperatures around 70 and partly cloudy, so it does not look like we’re going to have a wet Fourth of July.”
