Bob Mintzer Directs Jazz Port Townsend Big Band on Jazz Northwest

Bob Mintzer, Grammy-Award winning saxophonist and co-founder of the Yellowjackets, was featured arranger at Centrum's Jazz Port Townsend for 2015.  He conducted a special all-star big band at the Saturday matinee concert at the McCurdy Pavilion at Fort Worden State Park.

The concert was recorded for radio and will be broadcast Sunday, October 12 at 2 p.m. Pacific Standard Time on KPLU’s Jazz Northwest. It will also be streamed live on KPLU.org.

Mintzer has over 200 compositions to his credit. He teaches at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and has authored many books used by jazz educators.

Prior to starting the Yellowjackets, Mintzer worked with Tito Puente, Buddy Rich and the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra.

The Jazz Port Townsend All-Star Big Band is a 17-member ensemble drawn from the faculty of the Jazz Workshop which precedes the festival.

Most of its musicians are themselves renown leaders and soloists from across the US, who both teach at the workshop, and perform at the festival in late July.

Jazz Northwest airs Sundays at 2 p.m. Pacific Standard Time on 88.5 KPLU and streams at KPLU.org. The program is recorded and produced by Jim Wilke exclusively for KPLU.  Previous programs are archived at JazzNorthwestat KPLU.org.
