SOAP LAKE, Wash. — A proposal to change the name of Soap Lake to Lake Smokiam is drawing opposition from many residents of the city of Soap Lake.

Comments to the state Committee on Geographic Names say it would take away their identity and cause confusion.

The Wenatchee World reports a committee hearing on the change is set for May 18 in Olympia.

Soap Lake resident Bonnie Holt-Morehouse proposed the new name for the lake to foster positive relations with the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation. She told the paper she hopes the committee will see beyond some small town residents she says just don't like change.
