The Washington Transportation Department says Seattle's Alaskan Way Viaduct will reopen at mid-day Saturday, ending traffic congestion drivers call "viadoom" a day-and-a-half early.

Spokesman Travis Phelps said Friday that work is ahead of schedule on demolition, striping and other work for a bypass.

The elevated section of Highway 99 along the Seattle waterfront shut down the evening of Oct. 21 and wasn't scheduled to reopen until 5 a.m. Monday.

Phelps says commuters have done a good job in finding alternates but traffic often has been congested throughout the Seattle area this week, especially in the afternoons.

The demolition on the southern mile of the viaduct is part of a $3.1 billion project to replace the viaduct with a tunnel under downtown Seattle.
