Many of us are happy to have a day off, whenever and wherever we can get it. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is no exception. But besides sleeping in and catching up on chores, there is an opportunity to spend part of the day celebrating the life and values of King, honored for his nonviolent activism in the civil rights movement.
Many of the celebrations take place over three days. And many of them are opportunities to participate in service activities such as EarthCorps' event to remove invasive plants.
Here are some free activities on Monday – the federally observed holiday – where you can come together with others to celebrate and perhaps meditate on King’s vision for racial equality and an end to discrimination.
Seattle – Garfield High School
“Many Voices United to Build the Beloved Community” workshops at 9:30 a.m. – 11 a.m., rally at 11 a.m., and march at 12 p. m. from Garfield High School to the Federal Building in downtown Seattle.
Bellevue - Crossroads
“The Celebration of a Dream,” tribute to King with entertainment and a health fair, noon - 3 p.m. at Crossroads Bellevue, 15600 N.E. Eighth Street, Bellevue.
Tacoma – Washington State History Museum
Find the stories of Northwest African Americans in the museum’s Great Hall, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Other activities also happening through the day, including “Test ride on the Sunnyland Bus: A Daughter’s Civil Rights Journey” history presentation by author Ana Marie Spagna.
