Noises Off
The classic farce by Michael Frayn
“Noises Off” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc. www.concordtheatricals.com
Michael Frayn’s Noises Off became an instant classic upon its London premiere at the Savoy Theatre in 1982. Since then it has toured multiple countries, had five successful revivals including a 40th anniversary revival in 2022, and two successful revivals on Broadway - the most recent of which was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Revival of a play and starred Andrea Martin and Megan Hilty who were both nominated for Tonys for their roles. Patti Lupone, Peter Gallagher, Campbell Scott, and Katie Finneran (who won the Tony for her performance as Brooke) have all starred in this show at some point. To say this show is a staple of modern theatre is an understatement. During its massive success, Frayn has continued to rework the script, updating dated references, and adapting to changing times.
This show contains so many beloved tropes of modern theatre and a farce: tons of laugh moments, doors, mistaken identity, doors, slapstick comedy, love triangles (quadrangles even!), multiple doors, eccentric characters, so many props (sardines!), and so so many doors. The story involves that other beloved framing device of theatre: the play within the play. Each of the three acts of Noises Off shows the same part of the play, aptly named Nothing’s On - a British bedroom farce. The first act is a vision of the final dress rehearsal before opening, the second act shows the chaos that erupts one month into their tour, and the third act shows a performance near the end of their run where actor relationships have deteriorated, commitment to the script is waning, and what can go wrong, does go wrong.
But, underneath of all of that humor comes the heart of the play: a group of actors facing adversity together and persevering through each new obstacle tossed in their direction.
Join us for a night you will not forget where you will smile, laugh, maybe snort laugh, and surely be entertained by this talented group of actors and technicians! Leave the tensions and stress of the real world behind and be whisked away to the English countryside during a show which has been called, “the funniest farce every written,” and “the classic farce.” You won’t be disappointed!
