Seattle Youth Commission seeks new teen members

Seattle wants to know what teenagers have to say about city government. It’s looking for thirteen to nineteen-year-olds for the Seattle Youth Commission.

Garfield High senior Lucas Smith has been on the commission for three years. He says he’s learned how city government works, and that he’s also gained a lot of valuable skills:

A big part of what we do is work in groups for all sorts of different things. I’ve gotten a lot of experience organizing a small group of people to work on a project. And I’ve gotten so much better at that than I was beforehand.

In the past year, the Youth Commission has worked with King County Metro to better align bus routes with start and end times of classes.

Another project is with the Seattle Police Department. Teens met with commanders to help improve relations with youth and the police.
