An unusual concert featuring three singers was one of the features of Centrum's Jazz Port Townsend in July. The singers, Johnaye Kendrick, Sachal Vasandani and Dena DeRose performed together in a "singers' jam" to open and close the concert and each did a solo turn on their own. All three were also on the jazz vocal faculty of the Jazz Workshop which precedes the festival concerts the last week of July each Summer. The concert was recorded and broadcast exclusively on 88.KPLU.
All three jazz vocalists are recording artists with their own CDs, and they were accompanied by Eric Verlinde, piano, Jon Hamar, bass and Julian MacDonough on drums. Ms.DeRose accompanied herself at the piano on her solo songs.
Jazz Northwest is recorded and produced by Jim Wilke exclusively for 88.5 KPLU. The program also streams live at kplu.org and is available as a streaming podcast following the broadcast. The next program in this series from Jazz Port Townsend will feature a preview of the Earshot Jazz Festival with John Gilbreth.
