Maria Joyner-Wulf led several ensembles drawn from a pool of ten musicians for her concert in the Black Box Cabaret Jazz series at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts in Olympia. All the music in this concert was from original compositions by Maria Joyner-Wulf or saxophonist Cynthia Mulllis, who was also one of the principal soloists.
Maria Joyner-Wulf is a drummer and percussionist based in Olympia and an important part of the Olympia Jazz scene. She has also performed across the country and with the Seattle Women's Jazz Orchestra as well as leading her own groups and was a mentor in the KPLU School of Jazz CDs. A frequent associate has been Cynthia Mullis, who plays saxophones, flute and bass clarinet in this concert and contributes a couple of her own compositions. Other musicians in the ensemble include John Croarkin, Aaron Wolff, Barry Caldwell, Reuel Lubag and Wayne Bliss.
This concert is part of the Black Box Cabaret series celebrating Women in Jazz, produced by Michael Olson for the Washington Center. The next concert in the series will feature saxophonist and flutist Tobi Stone on March 27, and the final concert will be Amy Denio on May 22.
