Latin Jazz Birthdays: Turre and Lynch

Sep 12, 2013

Today is the birthday of two outstanding jazz artists who have years of experience in the Latin jazz format:

Steve Turre 9/12/48

Trombonist Steve Turre grew up in the San Francisco Bay area where he "absorbed daily doses of mariachi, blues and jazz." While attending Sacramento State University, he joined the Escovedo Brothers salsa band, which began his career-long involvement with Latin Jazz.   Steve worked with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria and Rahsaan Roland Kirk, who introduced him to seashells as musical instruments.

Brian Lynch  9/12/56

Currently Professor of Jazz Trumpet at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, Brian Lynch came up through Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and the Horace Silver Quintet.  His collaborations with Latin jazz master Eddie Palmieri are Grammy Award-winning.  Here's a recent video of Professor Lynch and his student band:
