Crews Fix U-Village Water Main Break

A massive water main break near the University Village Shopping Center in Seattle is fixed. Seattle Public Utilities says it restored service shortly after 2 a.m. Wednesday.

The incident began Tuesday afternoon, when a 16-inch pipe burst near the busy U Village Shopping Center, flooding streets and hampering the evening commute.

SPU says customers experiencing brown water should run taps until it clears up. The utility says the discolored water comes from stirred-up sediment inside the pipe, and is safe, if unappealing.

Crews plan to look at the damaged section of pipe to figure out what caused it to break.

The pipe is estimated to be more than 80 years old. SPU says that’s “middle-aged by local standards.”
