Remembering Lofurno's with Melody Jones

Lofurno's postcard

On this week's Jazz Northwest, we'll remember Lofurno's with Melody Jones playing solo piano on one tune and joined by Fred Greenwell in another in 1993. The club and restaurant were a favorite for food and jazz in the 80s and early 90s in Seattle. Melody Jones played solo and sang in the lounge, joined now and then by Fred Greenwell on tenor sax and Buddy Catlett on bass. Plus, early Ernestine Anderson & trio, and Johnny Griffin and Lockjaw Davis Quintet from gigs at The Penthouse in the 60s.

Also on this week's show, the Clarence Acox Quintet, the Tall and Small band, Kelley Johnson, Dmitri Matheny and Ryan Burns, and some suggestions for where to hear some live jazz in the coming week.

Jim has been a fixture on Seattle radio since 1961. He was the host of Jazz After Hours on Public Radio International from 1984-2014. Currently Jim has been producing Jazz Northwest for KNKX since 1988. This weekly program focuses on the regional jazz scene and frequently includes performances Jim records on location for Jazz Northwest.
