Duck fans who went to bed in a panic Sunday day night awoke Monday to learn that University of Oregon football coach Chip Kelly has turned down an offer to coach in the NFL. He will remain at the U of O.
Citing “unfinished business” at the University of Oregon, Chip Kelly has rejected an offer to coach the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to stay and coach the Ducks.
According to U of O athletic director Rob Mullens this means Kelly wants to “continue to build this program.” Mullens said Monday he expected high level interest in Oregon coaches as an indicator of the school’s success.
"Our program has evolved to where it’s at a very elite level. This is going to happen," Mullens said. "This is an unintended consequence, this is a positive of having the type of success that we’re having. Our goal is to continue to have this kind of elite football program and high level success. So we anticipate these kinds of situations are going to present themselves again."
Coach Kelly is currently out on the recruiting trail and unavailable for comment, said Mullens, who admitted to having spent a few sleepless nights recently.
National signing day for college football recruits is February 1.
