A photo from the 1984 Bellevue Jazz Festival brought back nice memories and a desire to have a reunion for four Northwest musicians. Jay Thomas, John Stowell, Bruce Phares and John Bishop hadn't played together as a group since the mid-80s but after a single rehearsal they said it was just like it was then, only better!
The quartet played a one-nighter at the cozy Egan's Ballard Jam House and it was standing room only when they took the stage for a set of standards and jazz classics. The music was recorded with a single stereo microphone and if you listen to the broadcast or podcast with headphones you'll get a true intimate jazz club experience, sitting right in front of the band with the audience around you. Be sure to have a suitable beverage at your elbow!
Jazz Northwest airs on Sundays at 2 PM Pacific on 88.5 KPLU and streams at kplu.org. The program is recorded and produced by Jim Wilke exclusively for KPLU. Each program is also available as a podcast following the broadcast.
