SRJO presents The Music of Jimmy Smith and Oliver Nelson
Check this out: In 1962, the self-taught Hammond B3 jazz organist Jimmy Smith and the revered composer/big band leader Oliver Nelson collaborated for the popular LP release on Verve Records Bashin': The Unpredictable Jimmy Smith. This was the first of a series of albums representing one of the most intriguing partnerships in jazz. Nelson's sophisticated and widely appealing arrangements paired with the soulful hard-driving B3 organ made for a compelling sound. Guest director and saxophonist Dr. Clark Gibson leads SRJO in a concert featuring Nelson's rich and spirited orchestrations along with Seattle favorite Joe Doria playing the part of Jimmy Smith on the Hammond B3.
Selections include Down by the Riverside, Hobo Flats, and Black Brown and Beautiful, plus other classics recorded from 1962 to 1966 by this dynamic pair.
