Greg Ruby Trio
Greg Ruby returns from NYC to the Pacific Northwest and will perform for the Olympia Jazz Central’s Monday night concert series at the Eagles Club Hall on Monday, May 26th at 7pm. Joining Ruby will be Seattle violinist Julian Smedley and Olympia bassist James Schneider. The trio will perform a mélange of compostions by guitarist Django Reinhardt, timeless swing standards and original work by Ruby.
For over two decades, Greg Ruby called Seattle home before moving to NYC in 2019. While in the PNW, Ruby was a member of “that mighty engine of swing” Pearl Django, was a beloved band leader in the Seattle-area swing dance scene and released countless records – including “Syncopated Classic,” a project which unearthed, restored and recorded the nearly lost work of 1920’s Seattle jazz pioneer Frank D. Waldron and was awarded Earshot Jazz Magazine’s “Northwest Recording of the Year” in 2017.
Julian Smedley started his music career as a choirboy in an English cathedral. As a violinist he performed regularly on BBC television and radio both as a soloist and an orchestral player. He co-founded the Bowles Brothers Band that recorded on Decca Records. Since moving to the West Coast of the U.S., he has performed with such artists as Art Lande, Ralph Towner, Gary Peacock and Gil Evans, and he was a member of the Bay Area’s Hot Club of San Francisco. Since his 2011 return to the Pacific Northwest, Julian has been performing with The Debutones, Julian and Alison, a jazz duo with his wife and Bistro String Trio.
