Starbucks shift supervisor Gailyn Berg and barista Tim Swicord outside of their store in Springfield, Virginia. The two led an effort to unionize their store but ultimately the workers voted against the union.

Baristas across the country are leading union drives at their workplaces. A combination of factors have led to this surge in activism among service workers who before now felt they had little voice.
