The Awards Show: Sound Effect, Episode 130

Credit Kevin Kniestedt
Stories from Sound Effect won 5 national awards last year from the Public Radio News Directors Incorporated.

This week on Sound Effect, we share the stories that won national awards this year. Our first story, from Jennifer Wing, profiles a group of men that have been playing an elaborate game of tag for decades. Next, we’ll meet Sophie, a curly-haired six-year-old girl from Bellingham who was born a boy, and learn about new research from the University of Washington that suggests trans kids who are accepted by their parents tend to have positive mental health measures.

Also, Sound Effect producer Kevin Kniestedt ponders about whether he should or shouldn't punch a celebrity. Then, Arwen Nicks talks to Charlene Strong about the night her wife died, and how that catapulted her into a life of activism. Jennifer Wing's story of two South Park neighbors and their very different lives also won national accolades this year.

"Sound Effect" is your weekly tour of ideas, inspired by the place we live. The show is hosted by 88.5's Gabriel Spitzer.
