As mentioned in this space last week, Kneebody has a new album out October 18. Chapters is a collection of classic angular Kneebody originals, featuring guest vocalists on half the album. Becca Stevens, Josh Dion, Gretchen Parlato and Michael Mayo all add their progressive modern aesthetic to the album. This release also marks the departure of Kneebody co-founder and bass player Kaveh Rastegar.
Rastegar plays on six of the album's ten songs, but on tour the bass will be played by drummer Nate Wood, while he simultaneously plays the drums. Though Kneebody isn't expected to be bringing a singer with them on tour, you can get a taste in this video with Mayo on the Haitus Kaiyote song "By Fire" from their EP of cover songs from earlier this year.
Opening the show at Nectar on October 9 will be our friends from Portland, Trio Subtonic. Keys player Galen Clark and bassist Bill Athens are the primary songwriters for the trio, which has been working with iconic Seattle drummer D'Vonne Lewis more recently. Lewis will be playing with the band at Nectar, with frequent "4th Subtonic" Dan Balmer featured on guitar.
On this week's New Cool, you'll hear the brand new Trio Subtonic single "Elegy", an extended chill out groover featuring Lewis' drumming at his most graceful. KNKX host Abe Beeson will be the MC for this October 9 show at Nectar Lounge, and both bands will record studio session performances here that day. So come out to Fremont for all the fun - for free, if you're lucky! Here's where to enter to win a pair of tickets for the show. Good luck!
The New Cool airs Saturdays from 3 to 5 p.m., hosted by Abe Beeson and produced by KNKX Public Radio in Seattle, Wash.
