The New Cool turns three years old this week!

Abe Beeson
Happy 3rd Birthday to The New Cool on KNKX!

Inspired by modern jazz creations of musicians raised on rock, hip hop, electronica and musical styles around the world, The New Cool celebrates three years on 88.5 KNKX this Saturday afternoon. We're packing this weekend's show full of stars and some brand new sounds for you to thank you for your support.

Recalling our first shows, you'll hear New Cool heroes Kamasi Washington, BadBadNotGood, Charlie Hunter, Snarky Puppy, GoGo Penguin, and an exclusive studio session recording from The Bad Plus Joshua Redman. KNKX presents saxman Redman and his own quartet at the Triple Door November 20 and 21.

Our neighbors are always well-represented on The New Cool. This week, listen for the new album from the Barrett Martin Group, Polyrhythmics' new single, Seattle-grown-New-York-based Jessica Lurie's alto saxophone matched with Nels Cline's guitar, and the wild trombone-saxophone-electronics combination of Naomi Moon Siegel and Kate Olson's Syrinx Effect.

The Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio are on my list for this anniversary show as well. Rumor has it Delvon may be relocating back to the Northwest soon, and the trio celebrates a new music video with a performance at Nectar Lounge in Fremont November 13. KNKX is proud to present this show, which includes star-studded opening bands Unsinkable Heavies and Rippin' Chicken. Both are side projects closely connected to the DLO3 and their friends from Seattle's Polyrhythmics.

KNKX has also championed the live experience and we look forward to more collaborations with musicians and venues around the Northwest. Attending live concerts is the most direct way to support the art form, so take us up on the concert information we share and our frequent ticket and CD giveaways.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7xdRqAO7T4

Looking ahead, we hope to unveil the long-awaited On Demand listening feature very soon. The show was always intended to be completely shareable around the world, and this development will mean a vastly increased potential audience for modern jazz.

The New Cool would not be possible without the appreciation and support of you and your fellow listeners on KNKX. Thank you so very much, and stay tuned as the future of jazz reveals itself in the weeks, months and years to come.

The New Cool airs Saturdays from 3 to 5 p.m., hosted by Abe Beeson and produced by KNKX Public Radio in Seattle, Wash.

Abe grew up in Western Washington, a 3rd generation Seattle/Tacoma kid. It was as a student at Pacific Lutheran University that Abe landed his first job at KNKX, editing and producing audio for news stories. It was a Christmas Day shift no one else wanted that gave Abe his first on-air experience which led to overnights, then Saturday afternoons, and started hosting Evening Jazz in 1998.
