The music of two beloved Brazilian songwriters is being celebrated with two new albums that we'll sample this week on Saturday's Jazz Caliente.
Major contributors to the magic of MPB (Música Popular Brasileira), Milton Nascimento and Ivan Lins have written hundreds of songs that translate beautifully to other genres, especially jazz.
Antonio Adolfo, Brazil's genius pianst/composer/arranger leads his eight-piece band on his latest album, BruMa: Celebrating Milton Nascimento. Adolfo's brilliance is evident in his arrangements, in which he takes vocal or lyric-based music and turns it into instrumental pieces that still convey the message.
Clarinetist Eddie Daniels is as comfortable playing classical music as he is playing jazz. He's long had an affinity for Brazilian music, too, and his 2018 Grammy-nominated Heart of Brazil: A Tribute to Egberto Gismonti captured the essence of that iconic multi-instrumentalist. Daniels' latest work takes on the romantic compositions of Ivan Lins, with help from contemporary jazz pianists Bob James and Dave Grusin, and the Harlem String Quartet.
