The father of the teenager who killed four students and himself at Marysville-Pilchuck High School has been arrested. Raymond Lee Fryberg, 42, is charged with illegally purchasing the gun used in the mass shooting.

It was last October that Fryberg’s son, Jaylen, shot his friends and then turned the firearm on himself in the school cafeteria. One of the victims, his cousin, was wounded but survived.

According to the complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Seattle, Raymond Fryberg purchased the Beretta, model PX4 Storm, in January 2013 at a Cabela’s store.  The court filing alleges Fryberg was prohibited from purchasing a firearm because there was a permanent protection order against him.

In 2002, his then-girlfriend asked the Tulalip Tribal Court for the protection order alleging Fryberg had physically assaulted her by hitting, slapping and/or pulling her hair.

The federal complaint says Fryberg lied on the form when he purchased the gun at Cabela’s, by stating that he was not subject to a protection order.

Raymond Fryberg will appear in court in Seattle this afternoon. In a press release announcing the charges, Acting U.S. Attorney Annette Hayes said the case, which was investigated by the FBI and the Tulalip Tribal Police Department, is an example of federal, state, local and tribal law enforcement working together to prosecute those who illegally possess firearms.

“Guns in the hands of people who have demonstrated they will use violence is a dangerous mix that is prohibited by law,” said Hayes.
