After 5 years, KNKX bids adieu to Going Places

Dec 27, 2018

Dear listeners,

We have some news about Going Places. As we close out 2018, we’re also ending our travel segment as a weekly feature.

We are very proud of the work we’ve done over nearly five years, but all good things come to an end. An unscientific survey of our previous segments shows that we visited six continents and hundreds of distinct locations.

We made cannoli in Sicily, stood on the balcony where the Czechoslovak state was declared, toured the battlefields of World Wars I and II, and heard about visiting Iran and North Korea. We spent time in Capetown, South Africa, and saw the cell where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned.

We went to Cuba, and heard from the people who lived there as they reacted to a thaw in diplomatic relations with the United States. We listened as church bells pealed in Vienna, got lost in Normandy, and drove over the Andes from Chile into Argentina. We took a backstage tour of Sea-Tac Airport and dispensed plenty of advice about how to get from A to B as enjoyably as possible.

But this segment was never about finding the hot travel deals, or the most exclusive restaurants. This segment was always about people.

Travel gives us so much more than photographs and souvenirs. It helps us establish relationships with people all over the world, and drives home the idea that the world is all at once a massive place full of new discoveries at every turn and a small place full of people who have so much in common.

If there’s one idea that’s guided Matthew Brumley through his decades of professional travel, and guided both of us as we produced this segment, it’s that the more we learn from each other and talk to each other and listen to each other, the better off we all are.

Thank you for coming along on this journey with us. Although the weekly episodes of Going Places come to a close with this week's edition, our conversations with Brumley will continue. He’ll remain a contributor to KNKX, and will keep helping us visit places around the Northwest and the world.

Sincerely,

Ed Ronco and Matthew Brumley
